Forget about being nervous during the medical examination
Medical exams make a conventional routine for most of the
people once or twice a year. We tend to get nervous and ticklish during the
examination despite our age. Attending a hospital is, of course, different from
attending a New York barbershop, as an example.
It is a natural response to get nervous in anticipation of a medical exam;
however, it does make it complicated for doctors to determine the proper
diagnosis. There are some useful tips on how to reduce your ticklishness.
1. The mental factor
As it was mentioned before, we get nervous when anticipating
the examination. We trigger our brain to think of a touch to be ticklish in advance.
Techniques like deep breathing and meditation may help if you know how to use
them, while the positive thinking method is complete nonsense. You need to know
how to deal with unsettling thoughts. Except for thinking like ‘I don’t want to
be touched’, think of ‘I have a thought that I don’t want to be touched’. It
turns out that your thoughts are just words, really. You may also try singing
them in your head, no matter how stupid it seems to be. Thoughts are not always
verities, remember that.
2. The third person
topic
Some people stay more confident when doing the exams private
with your doctor, while other people feel better when a third person is
present. It depends on certain facts such as the gender of your physician. If
your doctor is the opposite gender, you may invite a nurse or an assistant of
the same gender as yours to reduce the possible sexual tension. This method may
help in case you had any sexual abuse experience and get too nervous.
Otherwise, there is nothing bad being exposed to your physician, as long as
such procedures are held to help you maintain your health.
3. Body warmth
You know that feeling of getting a bit tremulous when your
body gets too cold. The muscle contractions caused by the chill may get worse
when you are nervous; therefore, consider the clothes you wear to be both
comfortable to take off for the examination and warm enough to keep you cozy.
Ask your doctor what clothes can you leave when getting disrobed to keep
yourself warm.
Use these simple tips and never be afraid to ask the
doctor’s intentions right before they are held. Make the medical exams
efficient both for you and your physician.
